Important to think about before you start!
Choose the right textile colour
Choose textile colour according to the quality of the textiles you want to dye. Herdins offers two types of textile dyes, which cover most textile materials.
Herdins Textile Colour natural fibre is a wash proof liquid textile dye for cotton, linen and viscose. Herdins Textile Colour multi fibre is a dye in the form of powder for cotton, linen, viscose, wool, silk and polyamide.
Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, elastane and acrylic, however, cannot be dyed with any of our fabric dyes.
Temperature
Choosing the right temperature is important for achieving a good result. The temperature you should choose depends on the textile material and the type of textile dye you use. Read more in the respective user instructions.
Whole & clean
Textile dyes are transparent and therefore the original colour and condition of the textile influences the result. In order to achieve an even new colour, the textile should be clean and in good condition. Never dye a dark garment in a light colour without bleaching it first. Use Herdins bleach Remol for this purpose.
Washing Machine
Choose a washing programme with as long washing time as possible and with full water capacity. Avoid programmes such as f. ex. wool, quick or energy saving because the washing machine does not pump sufficient water. Some washing machines adjust the water capacity according to the laundry weight. It is therefore very important to soak the textiles carefully (wet textiles weigh more), so that the washing machine pumps in enough water.
Do Not Forget Salt
In order to soak in the colour, the textile fibres need salt. Use Herdins Dying Salt or household salt and dose it according to the user instructions.
Weight
How much does a piece of clothing weigh? If you do not have a household scale, you can look at the table. Do not dye more than 1-1.5 kg of textiles at a time in a normal-size washing machine (5 kg).

Dye Quantity
Dose the textile dye according to the weight of the textiles. A package of Herdins Textile Colour natural fibre is enough for 500-1,500 g textiles and Herdins Textile Colour multi fibre for 250-500g. By adding more or less dye you can vary the nuance, see the package and the colour chart.
Good To Know
Certain types of textiles are harder to dye with a good result than others. This refers to f. ex. sports clothing with many details with different fibre qualities, which are handled with the so called finish so that the fibre shall get special qualities (for example impregnation and crease-proof). We do not recommend dyeing quilted jackets, ski clothes, furniture fabrics and similar.
Clothes of 100% cotton may sometimes be sewn with polyester thread. In these cases the threads will not be dyed and will retain their original colour. It is good to dye the threads afterwards with a textile colour pen.
It is good to dye a pattern...
Always be careful to clean the washing machine properly. This is especially important if you use the washing machine in the common laundry room. Clean the lint filter before and after the dyeing and dry possible discolouration with wet rag. As an additional back-up you can run the washing machine once more, either with laundry in similar colours or only with washing detergent or bleach (Remol).
Read the user instructions on the package carefully.
